Our Conductor

Kevin Zheng

Kevin has a Master of Music in Violin Performance and a Master of Public Health in Biostatistics from Yale University. He is also a graduate of Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. His primary teachers were Syoko Aki, Kathleen Winkler, Kevin Lawrence, and Richard Luby. Prior to becoming the music director of the New Haven Chamber Orchestra, he served as the orchestra’s concertmaster for two years, and studied conducting with then-conductor Heejung Park.

Praised by the Classical Voice of North Carolina for his “amazing technical competence, musical sensitivity, and commanding stage presence”, Kevin has competed in some of the world’s most prestigious violin competitions including the Menuhin International Violin Competition and the Stradivarius International Violin Competition. He hopes to bring a fresh new perspective to the New Haven Chamber Orchestra, influenced by conductors he has played for in the past such as Peter Oundjian (Yale University), Larry Rachleff (Rice University), Osmo Vänskä (Minnesota Orchestra), and Giancarlo Guerrero (Nashville Symphony).

When Kevin is not conducting or studying scores, you can find him practicing and teaching violin, working as a biostatistician, keeping up with his favorite video games, writing and editing videos, and playing pickleball.
